Stockwell Day and the Rule of Law

CBC radio reported yesterday that Stockwell Day is using ‘national security’ as a legal excuse to keep Canadians jailed in the U.S. from being transferred to Canadian jails. He is quoted as saying that what they are looking for is a move to “cushy Canadian jails.” Probably, I would, of course I didn’t try to smuggle tabs of E through an airport.

Part of the cushy-ness of Canadian jails is the fact that we have fairly decent reintegration programs as compared to most countries, but especially the United States. So, when these Canadians get released, as they all will sooner or later, they are going to immediately be deported to where? To Canada. Without having had the ‘cushy’ reintegration programs. Having lived the last 5 or so years in one of the toughest prison systems in the developed world.

So what’s better? Spending money on them now as prisoners in Canadian prisons? Or spending money on them when they are jailed again, this time in Canada and possibly when innocent people have been hurt or killed in the process of whatever crime they decide to commit?

Stockwell Day please keep your personal agenda out of Canadian inmate-transfer law. We have a little thing in Canada called the Rule of Law. Google it.
